Darren Smith bought WVE in March 2004 at the age of 32 having spent his career at Jordan Formula 1 and Aston Martin. Darren began his career at Aston Martin working as an engineer on the Aston Martin DB7. Within five years Darren led a team working on development of DB9 and AMV8. Darren was also seconded to Lotus Cars whilst developing the V12 Vanquish.
In October 2000, Darren was invited to join the Jordan Formula 1 team reporting to Eddie Jordan and was primarily responsible for reliability and quality of the F1 Race Cars. During this time Jordan became the most reliable car on the circuit with the least number component failure retirements and as result won many podium positions.
Darren studied at Coventry University gaining a 'BSc Hons Degree in Engineering Management' and is also a 'Chartered Quality Professional with the Chartered Quality Institute'.
